Last week, SPHERE Pakistan team participated in Midwifery TAG for Punjab; hosted at the IRMNCH & NP.
With support from United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) & IRMNCH & NP, SPHERE Pakistan is developing a roadmap to enhance the status of midwifery in the province through provision of recommendations to develop bridging courses for existing midwifes and for amendments in the service structure / creation of a new service structure.
The ultimate vision is to have a well-qualified midwife in our future service delivery system who is also at-par with international standards like those from the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). This will empower our future midwifes to compete at international level and to advance their midwifery careers within the country.
The Pakistan Nursing Council, now called Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PNMC) has already approved the BS Midwifery course. Universities like Fatima Jinnah Medical University and Health Services Academy will soon be offering these courses. Other universities shall follow suit. We will also be working on creating a well defined career structure for these future midwifes.
